The 2024 season of the GWA Wingfoil World Tour kicked off for the second time in the Wave discipline on the idyllic island of Sal in Cape Verde. 27 athletes from 11 countries took on the legendary waves of Ponta Preta, a picturesque spot with big, powerful and glassy waves. In the pure surfing discipline, athletes are judged on their carving and commitment in the swell, as well as aerial maneuvers without using the power of the wing.
In the men's competition, France's Malo Guénolé took the win at the first stop of the tour. Facing his close friend Cash Berzolla (USA) in the final, it was a close battle with both riders pushing the limits in some of the best waves the competition has ever seen. The final was a repeat of last season's final wave event; this time Guénolé turned the tables by a fraction of a point and Berzolla had to settle for second place. In the mini-final it was Finn Spencer (CAN) vs. Nathan van Vuuren (RAS), with Van Vuuren taking the win with his opening wave score of 9.0, landing him in third place.
In the women's competition, Spain's Elena Moreno came out firing, defeating reigning World Champion Moona Whyte (USA) for her first World Cup win with several strong waves, including an 8.13 at the very end. Her no-holds-barred riding in the intimidating conditions was breathtaking. Whyte was one of the strongest riders of the season and had just won the GKA Kite-Surf World Cup the day before, but she couldn't find the waves or the flow in the final and finished a few points behind Moreno in second place. The battle for the third podium spot was between Bowie van der Linden (NED) and Nia Suardiaz (ESP), with Suardiaz coming out on top with two 7-point scores to take third place.
